Steve Gordon's wife bought him a motor racing licence application form for his 30th birthday. This was just the start of his motorsport of course, and in 1999 Steve bought an old XR2 from a man in Essex, and entered the Stock Hatch championship.
The first year was all about learning - and there was plenty of that to do. Mechanical work, no problem, but body repairs were a new experience! Results began to improve, and the first race win came in a heat at Snetterton. The year ended with a creditable 28th in the championship, with 96 drivers having scored points during the year.
Following on from the first year of racing in 1999, the target in 2000 was to take it to the next level, and finishing as the highest placed XR2 driver, inside the top 10 overall, with 98 drivers having scored points, was a great result.
At the end of the year, the top 10 in the championship looked like this, but it was time to move on to a new car, and so the first of several Peugeot 106 XSi Stock Hatch cars took the number 8 in 2001
